Frequently asked questions

What is self-storage?

Self-storage is a convenient and secure way to store your belongings outside of your home or business. Whether you need cold storage, a shop condo, a climate-controlled unit, or one of our exterior parking spaces, self-storage works much like an apartment for your possessions — you pay, and they stay safely stored.

Many self-storage providers, including Storage Kings, also offer helpful extras such as on-site packing supplies and a range of features designed to protect your items, including security cameras, staffed facilities, and convenient access options.

Cold Self-Storage Units
The most common type of self-storage is Cold Self-Storage. These units include four walls, a roof, at least one light, one electrical outlet, and an access door—typically a large roll-up garage door that opens directly to the outside of the building. Most cold storage units offer drive-up access, making loading and unloading convenient.

These units are referred to as “cold” because they do not have temperature-regulating systems installed. As a result, the interior temperature generally follows the outdoor temperature. Cold self-storage units are available in a wide range of sizes, from extra small to extra large. Our storage experts are always happy to help you determine which size best fits your needs.

Shop Condo Self Storage
Shop Condo Self Storage is designed for larger storage needs, including small businesses, contractors, RVs, boats, and equipment. These units feature four walls, a roof, a walk-through entry door, and a large garage-style access door, with drive-up options available.

Shop condos are typically on the larger end of the size spectrum and include additional amenities such as:

  • A private bathroom with toilet, sink, and water heater

  • A shop utility sink with garden hose hookup

  • Multiple electrical outlets throughout

  • Floor drain

  • Ceiling fan

  • Bright, well-lit interiors

These features make shop condos ideal for users who need both storage and workspace functionality.

Exterior Parking Spaces
Exterior parking spaces are uncovered outdoor parking spots located on the storage facility property. These are a simple and cost-effective option for vehicles, trailers, boats, or RVs that do not require enclosed storage.

Climate-Controlled Self Storage
Climate-controlled self-storage offers additional features and protections beyond cold storage units. These options include temperature regulation and other enhanced amenities — we’ll cover those in more detail below.

Climate-controlled storage units are located indoors and maintained at regulated temperature and humidity levels. While they are typically more expensive than cold self-storage units, climate-controlled units are often essential for storing items that are sensitive to temperature and moisture fluctuations. This is especially important in geographic areas that experience extreme seasonal weather, where protecting valuables from heat, cold, and humidity can help prevent damage over time.
